On star formation rates in dwarf galaxies
نویسنده
چکیده
We present evolutionary synthesis models of starbursts on top of old stellar populations to investigate in detailed time evolution the relation between Hα luminosity and star formation rate (SFR). The models show that several effects have an impact on the ratio between L(Hα) and SFR. Metallicity different from solar abundance, a time delay between star formation and maximum Hα-luminosity, and a varying stellar initial mass function give rise to strong variations in the ratio of Hα luminosity to SFR and can cause large errors in the determination of the SFR when employing well-known calibrations. When studying star-bursting dwarf galaxies, and sub-galactic fragments at high redshift, which show SFR fluctuating on short timescales, these effects can add up to errors of two orders of magnitude compared with the calibrations. To accurately determine the true current SFR additional data in combination with models for the spectral energy distribution are needed.

The Evolutionary Status of Isolated Dwarf Irregular Galaxies Ii. Star Formation Histories and Gas Depletion
The results of UBV and Hα imaging of a large sample of isolated dwarf irregular galaxies are interpreted in the context of composite stellar population models. The observed optical colors are best fit by composite stellar populations which have had approximately constant star formation rates for at least 10 Gyr. The galaxies span a range of central surface brightness, from 20.5 to 25.0 mag arcs...
متن کامل1 0 Ju l 2 00 9 The Aromatic Features in Very Faint Dwarf Galaxies
We present optical and mid-infrared photometry of a statistically complete sample of 29 very faint dwarf galaxies (Mr > −15 mag) selected from the SDSS spectroscopic sample and observed in the mid-infrared with Spitzer IRAC. This sample contains nearby (redshift z . 0.005) galaxies three magnitudes fainter than previously studied samples. We compare our sample with other star-forming galaxies t...
متن کاملPulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I
We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...
متن کاملA Deeper Look at Faint Hα Emission in Nearby Dwarf Galaxies
We present deep Hα imaging of three nearby dwarf galaxies, carefully selected to optimize observations with the Maryland-Magellan Tunable Filter (MMTF) on the Magellan 6.5m telescope. An effective bandpass of ∼13Å is used, and the images reach 3σ flux limits of ∼8×10−18 ergs s−1 cm−2, which is about an order of magnitude lower than standard narrowband observations obtained by the most recent ge...
متن کاملStar Formation and the ISM in Dwarf Galaxies
High spatial and spectral resolution observations of the atomic interstellar medium in nearby dwarf galaxies reveal evidence for warm and cold neutral gas, just like the phases in our own Galaxy. The cold or qui-escent phase (≈ 20% of the HI in the galaxies studied, except for LGS 3) seems to be associated with star formation activity— it may mark the regions where the conditions are right for ...
متن کاملImpact of Reionization on the Stellar Populations of Nearby Dwarf Galaxies
Cold dark matter models for galaxy formation predict that low-mass systems will be the first sites of star formation. As these objects have shallow gravitational potential wells, the subsequent growth of their stellar populations may be halted by heating and gas loss due to reionization. This effect has been suggested to have profoundly influenced properties of present-day dwarf galaxies, inclu...
